PILOT: “Uptown Girl”

Quaint, picturesque. Trees lining two-story houses and driveways. California’s afternoon sky is a dotting of pink and orange clouds on blue. In the distance we see palm trees, from a few blocks over. We focus on one of the houses. A window opens.

The bedroom is small and cluttered. A high school graduation cap is decorated with a photo of New York City’s skyline and the closet is mismatched clothes meant for colder weather. On the bed, a laptop plays a cover of Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl.” (Her favorite song right now.) A girl leans out of the window, pressing her palms against the window frame. Dark hair, small frame. Meet — LIA Escapist

I love this name because it captures a feeling of escapism and dreaminess. Books have always been the biggest influence and inspiration in my life. Growing up, that expanded to different forms of narratives that I truly love. Magazines, movies, literature, art and music have shaped the way I live, so I wanted to carry that into my lifestyle blog.

I also think the name represents a part of who I am. For instance, as soon as I had the opportunity I made the 3,000 mile move to New York City. When I wasn’t happy there, I left again. But it’s not limited to my location. I never want to get bored in my work or complacent. I’ve never been comfortable settled and I’m always looking for something more. In some areas, it can be a flaw–never being satisfied where I am–but it’s one I’m willing to embrace.

“I hope something happens. I’m restless as the devil and have a horror of getting fat or falling in love and growing domestic.” — F. Scott Fitzgerald, This Side of Paradise

Yeah, it’s something like that.

The simple answer: a blog. On a larger scale: it’s part of my own personal project to expand my understanding of how information is spread through media and technology. Journalism is a career I’m genuinely considering and as news is becoming more and more internet-based, I’m exploring different platforms from social media to the blogging community. In the past month of setting up this website, I’ve gotten to know more about HTML, CSS and WordPress. I’m looking forward to taking better photos and expanding my base to social media.

It’s a learning experience for me and I’m a big believer that you get out what you put it. So I’m excited to be sharing what I love, and also this process of learning and growing. I want to be able to commit myself to this and I’m excited for it. It’s a work in progress thing.

I want to keep it open to the things that I love, but knowing myself it will likely feature a lot of book stuff, movies and life thoughts. It’s a personal-lifestyle blog and I’m keeping it open ended to my life experiences and whatever comes my way!

I hope to see you around as I build this blog. I’m really excited for the New Year and I look forward to hearing and seeing from you!
